Welcome to LoisEdwardsHouse.com!
This website chronicles the adventure of saving a
historic home from demolition. The house's original location was in
downtown Snohomish, WA; it was relocated to a lot on the Old Snohomish
Monroe Road, about five miles away. The house last belonged to a Lois
Edwards, until 1996, after which it was purchased by the Snohomish
School District with future plans of expanding the High School campus
onto its lot. In August of 2005, the school district put the structure
up for auction, hoping to find someone to relocate it. And, I won it,
for one dollar! But, that was just the beginning of the journey, and the
first of many dollars spent...
The house move happened
Sunday, June 25th, 2006 from 10pm to 4am.
An
interesting article about house moving in general, by the
Everett Herald (who also covered my house move).
Lois Edwards and her daughter
Camisha stopped by December 2006 to visit and take pictures of their
old house. It was fun to visit with them and learn what the house
looked like when they lived in it (about 20 years, from the
seventies to 1996). Camisha's memory was how comfortable she found
the soaking tub, and she is right, they don't make 'em like they
used to! They didn't know much about the house's history.
One clue I have: by incredible
serendipity, one day day after my garbage cans had been emptied by
the pickup men, I happened to notice a
tiny folded
paper that stayed behind in the bottom of the can. The garbage
in the can that week had been waste material from the electricians
emptying out insulation material from the walls to pull wires. How
that paper stayed in the can when it was dumped, I'll never know,
but I was lucky to find it. It was a $1 receipt for "book fund", made out to Betty Schusler
August 31, 1939; four years after the house was built. So, I'm
hoping someone can help me find the Schusler family so I can learn
more history!
